Autumn & Winter Breaks at Brean Sands,

If you own a static caravan at Holiday Resort Unity, our long season means you can enjoy the many things to do during the autumn and winter in and around Brean Sands... Take a look at a few ideas we have picked out for you.

Situated just 100m from Brean Sands Beach, Holiday Resort Unity offers the ideal location for a traditional beach holiday in winter.

However, being that we offer a longer season here that stretches from February right through to November, we aren’t always going to be blessed with “beach days”, where you can set up for the day, enjoy the sunshine, and build sandcastles!

The whole stretch of Somerset coast that benefits us, which includes the adjoining beaches of Berrow and Burnham-on-Sea, takes on a very different perspective out of season and many of our visitors prefer it at the quieter times.

So, we have come up with 10 ideas of things to do on a beach holiday in winter…..

Dog Friendly Beach Walks

On a crisp, sunny day hardly anything beats a walk along the beach. All the beaches are dog friendly out of season, so if you are bringing your four-legged friend(s) on holiday with you, it is an ideal time to wrap up and enjoy!

And even if you don’t have a dog, you can still enjoy the seven miles of golden sands we have on our doorstep.  Why not pop into our dog friendly cafe, COAST, over at Brean Leisure Park to warm up with a hot chocolate and slice of cake afterwards?

Escape

The solitude of a winter seaside resort offers a perfect form of escapism. The coast is widely known to promote positive mental health, and many studies have proven the health benefits of being by the sea, and the sound of waves alters wave patterns in the brain lulling a person into a deeply relaxed state.

Relaxing in this way can help rejuvenate the mind and body. Whether you choose to walk, or just sit with a hot flask of tea and watch the horizon, it is the perfect time of year to take time out and refocus and rejuvenate.

Beachcombing

Whatever your age, beachcombing is great fun, and you never know what you will find! Shells, driftwood, sea glass, pebbles, tangled and rubbery seaweed is all there to be found.

If you have children with you, why not make it into a competition and see who can find the most, or, make a list before you go and see how many things you can tick off.

Get Creative

Whether you are into photography or an established artist, or whether it is something you can always wanted to experiment with, the isolation of a beach in the shoulder seasons is a perfect place to capture the alternative landscapes that are presented without the hustle and bustle.

Storm Watching

Be sure to take care, but with Burnham-on-Sea having the second highest tidal range in the world, we have some fantastic high tides during the autumn and winter that make for great storm watching (from a safe distance).

Enjoy Events

In October each year the nearby resort of Weston-super-Mare is host to the annual Hydrogarden Weston Beach Race, an event for all the family, apart from the main attraction of the racing on the beach, you can visit the trading village, see many Trials & BMX demonstrations, meet & greet star riders from over the world and much more.

November is Somerset Carnival Season, where thousands flock   to Burnham and Weston from across the country to see the   fantastic carnival parades that take place generally around the   week that commences around the 5th of November each year,   with the Burnham Carnival on the Monday and Weston Carnival   on the Friday.

In December, Aspire Events organise the Brean Down Santa   Scramble, and Weston Athletic Club hold the Christmas   Cracker 10k race, with most participants donning fancy dress!

Beach Games

With all that space available, it is a perfect time of year for beach games, especially if you are away with the family or as part of a group. Kite flying, rounders, beach volleyball, cricket…. The list is endless and what better way to keep warm than with a bit of fun exercise and activity!

Winter Picnic

Why not? Wrap up warm, take a blanket and enjoy the views! With Holiday Resort Unity being just across the road, you can heat up your sausage rolls and corn on the cob, wrap them in foil, and lunch will still be served warm when you arrive at the beach, have a winter Barbecue, or toast marshmallows on a campfire.

Stargazing

You will need to take a torch and wrap up warm to go stargazing in the winter, but cold nights generally mean clear night skies – perfect for watching the stars come out. And with the nights drawing in earlier during the autumn and winter, it doesn’t mean a late night, so it is something that children will be able to enjoy.

Brean Beach

Everyone enjoys a walk on the beach and while you might not want to take your swimming stuff at this time of year, you can still enjoy the sights and smells of the seaside. Being just 200m away you have fantastic access from our park and you can walk for as long or little as you want – and dogs are welcome all year round! Just remember the sun sets early in the Winter.

Wildlife Watching

The Somerset coast is well known for its wildlife. Thousands of migratory birds come to the UK’s shores in the winter, so it’s one of the best times to go bird watching. You may also spot some wild animals, especially if you take a walk up Brean Down.

Brent Knoll

Brent Knoll was once known as the mount of frogs, dating back to before the Somerset Levels were drained. While we can’t guarantee you’ll see any frogs, we can say it makes for a lovely climb. Visit Somerset describes the walk as “moderate” with “footpaths that rise steeply”.
